I am a contractor with a customer that wants a 14' of loadbearing wall removed and the beam in the attic to support the roof and ceiling. The trusses are 2x6 rafters(king post type of truss). interior supporting boards for the rafters include only one 2x4 from the ridge down gusseted with 3/8" plywood. no diagonals. the clear span is no more than 30', and the roof is 1/2" ply with one layer of 240# asphalt. So I am thinking of attaching a laminate beam to both sides of the internal support of the truss by bolting and use a heavy guage metal strapping to tie the bottom cord to the laminate beam. what do you think?
