Remodeling with foam insulation panelsFrom: recobb@compuserve.com Category: Alternative Building Techniques Remote Name: 12.154.82.190 Date: 06 May 2003 Time: 11:26 AM
CommentsI am doing an extensive renovation of a 20x30 living room. I would like to increase the minimal insulation with foam panels, and I'm leaning towards EPS because of the environmental friendly properties, although I am aware of the fire hazards. I will be doing both the walls and ceiling. Wooden shingles (currently over plywood sheating) will be removed and replaced with vinyl siding on the exterior walls. The interior walls will be stripped to bare studs with drywall to be installed.
For the walls, does it make more sense to apply foam panels inside or outside? In either case, can the drywall or vinyl siding be applied directly over the foam panels (using suitable length fasteners) - or do I need some sort of structural arrangement (furring strips or ?) to support the drywall/siding?
For the ceiling there is a new roof (sort of a cathedral ceiling, so no access between ceiling and roof surface) - so my only option is to insulate inside. The ceiling is currently cedar(?) strips. If I can remove it without destroying it I may try to replace it on top of the insulation. If that does not look feasible, then I plan on putting the foam directly over top of the current ceiling surface and then covering that with drywall. The same question about support of the drywall applies - can I just use longer screws that reach through the foam, or do I need something additional?
Thanks,
Richard Cobb
