Dilemma: Wood Fence vs. Vinyl Fence?

I would appreciate opinions (pros and cons) regarding wood vs. vinyl fencing. Yard to be fenced in is approx. 210 ft. I realize the cost difference, but my main concerns are: upkeep (both time spent and cost) of wood and how each might look on part of the yard which is sloped (the wood fence would be custom built). We've also been told that because of the slope, we would not be able to have a semi-private vinyl fence, but instead have to use solid panels -- why is that?
