If you don't have access to the joists below, try driving a 3" finish nail thru the nap in the carpet and use a nail set to push the head below the surface of the subfloor. It may take some patience to find the joists but usually you can figure out where they are just by listening to the squeak and taking a look at any air regesters in the floor. If you have access to the joists from below just throw some glue on some shims and shim between the joist and the subfloor where the squeak is. Be careful not to shove the shim in too far, this could cause a hump in the floor.
