closed stairwell minimum width

Hi - I'm considering adding a closed stairwell to the attic of my house that I might finish out with a guest bedroom, activity room, bath, etc., and wonder what the minimum tread width is that is considered suitable for such an application. Additionally, this stairwell will need to make a 45 degree bend with a couple of winders at approximately its midpoint. Would a 36 inch tread width be sufficient in this case? Please feel free to offer opinions. TIA - Tom Dawson
