We are looking to buy a house. This particular house is a two story home and was built in 1884. Per inspector's notes it was noticed that there is a crack in the wooden support beam in the basement. He also noted that we should add additional support posts(lolly columns) to support this beam, perhaps two more. My question is what does this entail(replacing or reinforcing this beam)and would you be able to provide any $$$ figures as to what it might run. The basement measures approximately 20x20 and the home is approx 1064 square feet. Thank you.
