Air Duct - Single Return vs. Individual Room Returns

I own an older home and the ducting design is base board registers in each room with supply and return on opposite walls. This design incorporates individual return vents in each room rather than a centrally located return such as in the hallway ceiling. I am going to replace my existing furnace and without going into detail it will take some extensive ducting work to tie into the existing return ducting and would actually be much easier to install a single return in my hallway via the attic. My question is whether one return design or the other (individual room or single) is more efficient. I do have a problem with one end of the home always being warmer than the other and am thinking the single return may help balance this out. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
