When properly installed, both stucco and Hardiplank perform well. It's really a question of style and aesthetics. Stucco has a certain feel, typical of the Mediterranean climates. It can be stippled or smooth-troweled to give a plaster-like finish. Hardiplank, on the other hand, has a traditional feel, reminiscent of wood siding. Sometimes the materials can even be intermixed. The key with either stucco or siding is proper installation and waterproofing. Both products should last the life of the structure if properly primed, painted and maintained. Builders Websource.
