CommentsTrex itself does not cause mildew. Mildew forms on dirt and other organic matter that comes in contact with a given surface. Rougher surfaces tend to harbor more dirt and organic material, which can allow mildew to form in the pores. A similar problem exists, for example, on concrete and clay tiles used on roofs, as well as stucco and wood or vinyl siding. Just about any synthetic material you choose, including even natural wood, can result in mildew on the surface if the conditions are right. According to Trex, "...periodic cleaning of Trex decking will remove much of the dirt that is a food source for mildew. It is best to clean the dirt off your deck before mildew starts. If mildew appears on your Trex deck, a deck wash containing sodium hypochlorite and a detergent should be used.
First, sweep the deck clean of any debris and clean any clogged gaps. Apply deck wash to a dry deck, brush with a stiff broom (you should see a slight "foaming"), wait 10 minutes, and then rinse. Let the deck dry completely. (Deck wash is effective only when applied to a dry deck.) Apply deck wash again, brush, and leave it on. Wait one hour and then rinse. A slight "yellowing" of your deck is normal and will fade in a matter of days. NEVER mix any other cleaners (ammonia, phosphoric acid, etc.) with deck wash.
Keep in mind that mildew is easily spread. Should other parts of your home have mildew (roof, walk, etc.), the mildew could return. Mildew does not damage Trex decking and, if it continues to propagate, will cause no harm to Trex decking. Proper gapping and regular cleaning of a Trex deck will significantly inhibit the onset of mildew growth. It is important to note that there are no 100% guarantees of success even after the best known control measures have been taken. Any extended period of warm, humid, and/or rainy weather conditions may result in mildew growth despite all precautions.
The following brands of deck cleaners have been found effective in removing mildew from Trex decking:
Olympic
Valspar
Other deck wash/cleaners containing sodium hypochlorite should also remove mildew from Trex decking. Check the active ingredients before applying to ensure that it contains this ingredient. Always read the maufacturer's safety instructions, as well as directions for proper disposal of an environmental hazard and protection of surrounding plants and shrubbery.
