Re: mud sill and skirt board replacement on a brick houseFrom: info@builderswebsource.com Category: Foundations and Basements Remote Name: 63.198.181.43 Date: 08 Feb 2003 Time: 09:04 PM
CommentsYou have a rotted portion of mud sill and rim joist that needs replacement, but the exterior brick is interfering with the job. First, if the effected area is very small and non-structural, you might consider rehabilitation of the wood, rather than total replacement. Marine repairs often use this technique on rotted wood. Products such as Smith's CPES and Epoxy filler have been effectively used ( see previous posting at http://www.builderswebsource.com/_discBT/00000272.htm ). However, if the section is beyond repair, you must typically replace a more substantial section of mudsill to ensure that it is properly anchored into the foundation. Replacing the rim joist is probably next to impossible without removing some of the lower courses of brick on the outside. We recommend that you leave this job to a restoration company that specializes in masonry and home restoration, otherwise you could create a lot more collateral damage than you otherwise imagined!
