25 year old home. Wood framing. Crack on drywall where dining area and great room meet. Considerable amount of buildup as well from past attempts at taping and painting. Crack still reappeared. Trip to the attic showed that the 2x12 header between the two room was coming apart and there was movement there. Over time the beams seperated and caused the crack. I have retaped but Iwas wondering about what a suitable fix would be. Here's what I did... I used large clamps to draw the header back to one another.I predrilled for carriage bolts, nuts and washers about every foot. Added some 3" inch drywall screws as needed to aid in securing everything. Then I installed a 2"x6" along the top section of the header for additional strength. Do you think another attempt at taping and patching will adhere. And hopefully I didnt do anything to jeopordize the ingrity of the strcture. Please advise.
