Boring I BeamsFrom: Richard.izzi@identrus.com Category: Architecture and Building Design Remote Name: 67.86.97.247 Date: 19 Jan 2003 Time: 09:47 AM
CommentsI have a raised ranch built in 1955 that is currently under remodel. There is a 10" standard flange steel I beam spanning the witdth of the lower floor at 12 feet. Into the flange rest the floor joists spanning 12 ft to a bearing wall and 14 feet to another bearing wall. My builder says that the principal weight on the beam is the floor joists, there are no point loads from the roof or other wise transferred onto the beam. The beam is anchored into the poured cement foundation on one side and the reinforced brick fireplace sturucture on the other. The beam is 1/4" thick.
My plumber / electrician wants to bore through the beam with one 3 1/2" hole and and four 2 1/2" holes spaced across the beam to bring the plumbing out of the slab and to run electrical through the ceiling. My builder beleives that it should be ok given that the beam does not span a large space and is not carrying a signfiicant load. Is it permissible to bore through the steel beams in the manner that one would bore through engineered floor joists or microlam beams to run plumbing & electrical?
Thank you
