Re: Structural info, removing a wall between my kitchen...From: info@builderswebsource.com CommentsIt is generally possible (though sometimes costly) to remove existing intermediate supports and span a clear distance that's significant greater than what you currently have. This generally requires the installation of a new load-bearing beam, such as a glulam, LVL, steel flitch plate beam, or a steel I beam. You'll need to consult with a licensed structural engineer who can evaluate your loads, taking into account all live and dead loads, as well as snow, wind and/or seismic loads. Furthermore, you want to ensure that the floor doesn't feel bouncy when you're done. Therefore, ask your engineer to design for a very stiff floor -- one that won't deflect like a trampoline when you walk on it! Builders Websource
