livingroom

I'm interesting in removing the walls and headers that separate my living,
dining area and kitchen for an open floor plan. The house is a split-level built
in approximately 1956. There is a basement below this area and it has two steel
columns. There is a 17x18 foot bedroom above the area. Above that is an attic
crawl space and the roof. Is it possible to create this open floor plan in my
home? Is there a way to hide the headers and not use columns in this type of
home?
