A flitch plate is a plate steel support member that is typically bolted
between existing 2x built-up joists. The flitch plate provides superior
stiffness and strength compared to wood alone. The design of such beams should
be left to a licensed structural engineer who can properly assess all the loads
the beam is expected to carry. A good primer on flitch plate beam design is
available in PDF form from DeStefano Associates at: http://www.destefanoassociates.com/tech/design1.pdf
