Adding air vents to basement from gas furnace

I have a gas furnace and an unfinished basement. It would be easy to add a couple of additional vent from the existing duct work to put a little heat downstairs. But - nothing is ever as easy as it looks. What do I have to be careful about. Can the extra vents cause a problem for the furnace? Or since it's just burning gas will it just be that it has to burn more gas to heat upstairs since part of the heat is being diverted downstairs? I'm assuming that I should make sure and cut the vents off during the Summer so I don't overwork my air? Any pointers? Thanks!
