Eliminating support polesFrom: nward01@snet.net Category: Structural Remote Name: 204.60.218.58 Date: 02 Dec 2002 Time: 05:47 PM
CommentsWe are converting our garage into a family room. We have a triple 2 X 10 support beam spanning 16 feet - it has four support poles. We would like to eliminate the two support poles in the middle. Our house is a cape, the garage is below two floors. How can this be done? What exactly is a "flitch plate" ? Is this what we need? What about attaching a length of steel to each side of the triple 2 x 10 beam? In essence, creating an I-beam, this has also been suggested. Does that make sense? Thanks for the help!
