I am building a new home and the entire foundation will sit on rock. I have designed an 19' square screened in 3 season porch to attach to the backside of the house (off of Kitchen area). My initial thoughts were to pour the footings (5' below grade), pour a 5' foundation, fill with sand and then gravel and pour a concrete pad on grade. This would be similar to building a garage. I am now considering constructing the foundation either on sonar tubes with post and beams where the porch will have a wooden floor system, or to put a wooden floor structure on the 5' foundation leaving me with a 5'crawlspace under this porch area. We intend on placing a hot tub into this area. I am from Ontario Canada where we have winters - can you tell me the pros or cons of either idea?
