beam replacement of interior load bearing wallFrom: erickcalderon@yahoo.com Category: Structural Remote Name: 64.169.174.147 Date: 04 Oct 2002 Time: 06:16 PM
CommentsI just bought a house that has a a wall right in the center of the living room that divides it into two seperate areas. there are 6 foot openings on both sides and the wall itself is 10' long. it looks like this:
------__________------
6' 10' 6'
open wall open
I want to drop that center wall, but it is load bearing. I plan to put in a 22' beam in its place that is flush with the ceiling. Can I use a steel Ibeam, are engineered wood beams better, can I use or are header beams available in that span. What do you recomend the best way be.
THe two areas have un even ceilings so I was just going to drop the cieling (cut the joist and just have it fall into the living room). Then replace the wall with the beam. Then hang new joists and drywall over it all.
thanks
