Proper installation of French drains, along with additional considerations, is outlined in our online TechNote at: http://www.amazon.com/paypage/P3AXA5J8I1NRJ4 . Here you'll find a discussion of the ideal location of the drain pipe relative to the foundation footing, so as to prevent undermining of the load-bearing capacity of the soil. Be sure to provide proper pitch as well as a quality filter fabric...and remember to point the holes down, not up! Many people unwittingly point the drainage holes up thinking this makes common sense. But this raises the level of water in the trench to the top of the pipe, not the bottom, which is known as the pipe invert. Good luck! Builders Websource.
