crawlspace drainage

I need to dig a trench around perimeter of crawlspace to drain potential water from underground. My question is the location of the trench (8"d x 8"h x 12"w) shall be as close to foundation footer as possible (how close?, will that affect the overall structure?) or shall I keep certain distance away from footer? Thank you for your help. By the way, the ground surface of crawlspace is about flush with the top of the footer.
