Re: drainage of air conditionerFrom: info@builderswebsource.com Category: HVAC Remote Name: 63.198.181.43 Date: 23 Aug 2002 Time: 12:43 AM
CommentsAlways follow the manufacturer's recommended installation instructions when installing an air conditioning unit. If you don't have the booklet handy, call the manufacturer and ask to speak with their technical service department. However, some smaller units do not have a drain pipe. The condensation simply splashes onto the coils, helping to cool them...and the water drips into the pan and eventually evaporates. However, this can lead to an accumulation of mold if not properly maintained. Otherwise, you can provide a drainage escape through a small copper pipe. In such a case, the unit must be mounted so any condensation runs towards the pipe. Just a slight slope is all that's needed to make sure the pan doesn't fill with water. If you're getting a musty smell when running your system, then there is probably an accumulation of water and mildew on the coils and and the pan. This should be thoroghly cleaned by a professional.
