Re: crawlspace drainage and filter fabricFrom: info@builderswebsource.com Category: Drainage/Waterproofing Remote Name: 63.198.181.43 Date: 16 Aug 2002 Time: 12:51 AM
CommentsYour idea to install a perimeter French drain system is a good idea. However, doing it the wrong way will make your situation worse. For additional information on filter fabrics, see an earlier posting here: http://www.builderswebsource.com/_discBT/00000477.htm , which contains some useful tips. Silt fencing is a type of filter fabric, but usually with wooden stakes every 8-10 feet or so...and is used for erosion control on jobsites. There is filter fabric that is expressly designed for lining drainage trenches. As to whether or not these fabrics eventually clog over time is a subject of some debate. For this reason, selecting the right filter fabric for your soil conditions is important. Often, a civil engineer can help you to specify the correct type of fabric given your conditions. In addition, installation of the pipe (with holes facing down)...as well as proper drainage into a suitable sump, requires careful planning and engineering. Do this without experience will lead to poor results. If you have any doubts about how to do this, we strongly urge you to consult with a licensed specialist or drainage contractor. At a minimum, read our TechNote on drainage highlighted in the above link that provides useful installation tips. Builders Websource.
