We like your idea of creating a simple frame to box in your exposed ducting. Since this isn't structural, you can probably just use 2x3 white wood or pine. Try to secure the new framing with screws through the existing drywall into the studs of the closet (be careful of wiring or plumbing that may be hidden in the walls). Then, finish off with 1/2" drywall, tape, prime and paint to match. We do not recommend cutting the existing closet pole. Just leave it in place for best structural integrity. Builders Websource.
