Your proposed Endless Pool ( http://www.endlesspools.com
) has a weight of about 180 psf, which is significantly less than the
compressive strength of a concrete slab, which is usually at least 2,000-3,500
psi! Assuming your slab is properly reinforced and the ground underneath has
been suitably compacted, your basement floor should be plenty strong to carry
the weight of the pool. However, when installing a pool in a basement or any
enclosed area, keep in mind that you're introducing a significant source of
warm, humid air/moisture due to evaporation. Furthermore, chlorine additives
used to maintain pools (such as sodium hypochlorite) are corrosive to metals. It
is our opinion that you must consider a proper ventilation system to ensure that
you don't create a corrosive moisture or mold problem in your basement. The
amount of water vapor released by a pool is substantial, not to mention loss due
to overflow and splashing. We recommend that you consult with a ventilation
specialist to ensure that you have an ample supply of fresh air, and that stale,
moist air is continuously withdrawn from the area and vented to the outside.
