Re: moldings on side of staircaseFrom: info@builderswebsource.com Category: Carpentry and Framing Remote Name: 63.198.181.43 Date: 16 Jul 2002 Time: 11:33 PM
CommentsYou are installing chair rail molding and a wainscot on the bottom wall of your stairs and want to know how the chair rail molding should intersect the sloping cove moulding. Anytime two different pieces of moulding intersect, you must use professional judgment to determine the most aesthetically pleasing way to terminate the intersection. This often depends on the relative thickness or size of each piece. One common practice is to avoid an overlapping intersection altogether by terminating one piece in a bevel. In your case, for example, we recommend keeping the cove moulding fully intact along the full slope of the stairs. Then, terminate the end of the chair rail with a matching slope...and bevel the front face of the chair rail to provide a definitive cutoff just adjacent to the cove molding outer edge. Sometimes you can miter the end and glue in a small piece...all depending on the relative look you want to achieve. You may want to experiment with a few scrap pieces first...and see which way looks best to you. Builders Websource
