I have a large brick fireplace in my living room which is currently painted brick. I would like to install ceramic tiles over the painted brick but am not sure how to go about this. I am not sure whether I can just tile on top, filling the old brick mortar joints with adhesive or if I have to attach some type of board over the brick. If I do have to attach a board of some type over the brick, can yu suggest one that is not too thick as it will interfere with the mantel and also how do I address the opening where the edge of the board will be exposed? Thanks so much for your advice!
