We do not recommend installing backerboard, or any other surface over loose tiles on your bathtub surround. Loose tiles may be an indication of a moisture problem behind the tile. There could even be dry rot behind the walls if the moisture damage is excessive. Assuming the substrate is still in good condition and there are no signs of water damage, we recommend removing the tiles if possible. Then, you can screw 1/4" backerboard to the existing drywall and studs, following manufacturer recommendations. Then, you can tile over the backerboard. Alternatively, you can put in a decorative fiberglass or cultured marble finish. Be sure to seal and caulk all seams to avoid future water damage. Builders Websource.
