To tighten up your newell post, try squirting some some matching carpenter's wood glue into the crack. If this doesn't work or there's not enough gap, you may need to drill a very tiny pilot hole and set a finishing nail through an inconspicuous part of the handrail and the post. Patch the hole and refinish as needed to match the existing color and gloss.
