Vaulted Ceiling - Roof Expansion

My home is a single story, open floor plan, with a vaulted ceiling. There is a single support wall in the center. During winter months, the ceiling rises as much as 1.5 inches. This is evident by the gap that appears between the ceiling and the drywall on the supporting walls. This spring, I have noticed that several pieces of roof decking have popped loose from this excessive expansion. Is this normal? and are there ways to minimize the amount of expansion? I contacted a structural engineer and he suggested removing insulation to allow equalization of rising hot air. Any help would be greatly appreciate.
