Re: testing for asbestos ceiling tile? From: info@builderswebsource.com Category: Wallboard/Veneer Plaster Remote Name: 63.198.181.43 Date: 15 May 2002 Time: 11:56 PM
CommentsYour ceiling was partially damaged due to a roof leak, which caused a few ceiling tiles to fall down. The only way to know for certain whether your ceiling tiles contain asbestos is to have them tested by a certified asbestos testing laboratory. Given the age of your tiles (circa 1974), there is a reasonable likelihood that they do contain some asbestos. Asbestos was a very common building product used in a wide range of insulations, tiles, patching compounds and other building materials. Unless the asbestos is sawed (which releases fibers into the air), chances are small of any significant health threat from a few fallen tiles. So long as products containing asbestos are not disturbed or cut, you can safely life with these products without fear. We recommend that you thoroughly clean the damaged area and surrounds and have the repair made as soon as possible. Care should be taken with the disposal of the fallen tiles so as to mitigate potential airborne contamination. If you still have lingering doubts, we recommend that you contact your local health department or city building department to get specific recommendations for your situation. Sometimes OSHA can point you to specialty contractors specially equipped to deal with asbestos-contaminated sites. In any case, don't panick. Asbestos-related illnesses have been limited primarily to workers who have had significant, repeated, long-term exposure to airborne asbestos particles, including automotive brake repairs.
