CommentsWith an island measuring 48" x 96", you have a significant piece of granite to install. We recommend at least 3/4" or thicker plywood, reinforced underneath with wood slats to help prevent sagging in the center. While the granite itself won't sag, it could crack if you ever step on it to change a light bulb. We've seen this happen often. The key is to provide a sturdy underlayment that doesn't flex, even if some one is standing in the center of the island. This will require some intermediate reinforcement to be sure.
