Re: To header or not to header... that is the question. From: info@builderswebsource.com Category: Structural Remote Name: 63.165.31.7 Date: 12 Apr 2002 Time: 01:48 PM
CommentsFrom your description, you will either need to replace the existing door header with a longer one, or you will need to add a new shorter header, along with king and jack studs to support the new header. The choice depends on how much space you have between the existing door and the opening for your bar pass-through. The header should be sized by a licensed engineer since we don't know what distributed or point loads may exist in the area you're remodeling. If the loads are "normal" type ceiling loads with no loads from the roof or a second floor, then a 4x12 header should be adequate. However, you must never compromise safety, so you should always consult with someone who can evaluate your exact conditions. If you decide to use one long header, we would still recommend at least two 2x4 studs or a 4x4 post betweent he door and the next opening. Builders Websource.
