Re: Removing Interior wallFrom: info@builderswebsource.com Category: Carpentry and Framing Remote Name: 63.198.181.43 Date: 24 Mar 2002 Time: 01:36 PM
CommentsIf we understand your description, you'll have an upstairs room of a 12x20 dimension, with a hip roof on top. When you use the word "ties", we're not sure in what context you're using these. Are you referring to 2x6 horizontal ceiling joists? Or are you referring ties that are holding rafters together within the roof structure? In any case, removing a load-bearing partition requires proper structural engineering and reinforcement. It's like that the interior partition is support either ceiling joists and/or part of the roof load. In either case, you would need to devise some alternative support mechanism, which may include a steel or laminated beam in the area where the wall will be removed. If you are unsure about the structural makeup of your home, please consult a local, licensed structural engineer who can draw up a plan that takes into account local conditions and loads, which may include wind, snow, or even seismic loads.
