Re: Installing A Ceiling Fan On a Vaulted CeilingFrom: info@builderswebsource.com Category: Electrical/Lighting Remote Name: 63.198.181.43 Date: 02 Mar 2002 Time: 04:29 PM
CommentsAnytime you improvise, Builders Websource always recommends that you check with your local building official for approval first. However, your idea sounds reasonable so long as:
1) You use an approved heavy-duty 4" octagonal metal junction box specifically designed for ceiling fan installations. These metal boxes are heavier than normal and use larger screws to support the weight of the fan.
2) Just as important is the way you anchor the extension block to the ridge beam. If the ridge beam is at least 4x material, you should have ample surface are to mount to. We recommend using construction glue between the block and the ridge beam in combination with one or two long lag bolts that firmly secure the block into place.
If you find that the ridge beam is 2x material...or just made from trusses (no ridge beam), you'll need a different approach to secure the fan.
As with any project, use common sense and make certain that you always design for safety. In addition, you'll probably need an extension pole on your fan to make certain that the blades clear the ceiling pitch by at least 12-18" at the closest point, while providing at least a 7' clearance from the floor to the fan blades.
