Slabs are fine on flat lots. With a 9-degree slope, you may find it easier to work with a crawlspace, using the slope to your advantage to create a stepped foundation for a sunken living room or other architectural detail. Personally, I always prefer a crawlspace if for no other reason than future maintenance is easier -- whether it's to repair a broken pipe -- or run networking cable under the floor. If you build a crawlspace, leave plenty of room (at least 30 inches) -- you're back will appreciate it when you have to get under there. Also, provide a vapor barrier and pour rat proofing. This will keep your crawlspace dry. Perimeter drainage is important to keep water out. For more information, read our technotes and online ebook in the foundations section. Builders Websource
