Re: finishing underneath side of stairs

Generally, wallboard is used along the slope of the stairs to provide a smooth and appealing finish to the bottom. Normally, the wallboard is screwed to runners on each side of the staircase. Depending on the width, you'll also need another runner along the center of the stairs. If your goal is to provide slightly more headroom, your best choice is to cut wallboard to match each run and riser. This is more tedious and will not provide as clean of a finish as the first suggestion, but it will work. We do not recommend carpeting or other surface materials as these may look cheap or out of date.
