Cleaning and Sealing Bricks

I have an old brick row house built in 1878 and I want expose a lot of the brick. Could you please tell me what products would be safe to clean bricks this old, and is it safe to seal the bricks? I've heard that the bricks need to breath. And I've noticed that after removing the plaster that was directly applied to bricks the mortar is smeared on and in between the bricks and it seems to me to be more like plaster or limestone the way it crumbles off easily. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
