compound staircase

We are trying to finish the stairway ceiling to the basement. I have heard it described as a compound staircase. The ceiling is actually the underside of the stairs heading up. Other than using wall board to frame in each step, are there any other ideas to finish it, and still keep as much head room as possible? We've had some crazy ideas from friends, like carpet, wood shingles, material... Anything would be helpful. Thank you.
