We are currently working on a plan for a large extension to our home which will involve additions to 3 of the 4 sides of the building (U- shaped effectively). The existing exterior walls are single brick (rather old home) and I am hoping you can recommend some support methods which would allow me to open up the existing walls to the additions without requiring the additions to support them in any way. Is there a 'rule of thumb' method for calculating exactly how much of the existing exterior walls can safely be removed without causing an structural problems? Any hints about problems which may be encountered during construction that can be factored in at the planning stage would be a help.
