Re: steel beamFrom: info@builderswebsource.com CommentsSince your configuration is too complex to describe accurately without a drawing, we worked backwards to determine what the approximate total load (live load + dead load) could be for the beam you specified (W10x19 A36 with 4" flange). Assuming an adequate support in the center of the 28' span, you can support approximately 1300 lbs./lineal foot along the beam. This must account for all live loads as well as distributed dead loads from the first and second floors, as well as the portion of the roof load transferred to the beam. At this rating, deflection is virtually nil and shear ratings are well within spec. However, critical cross section is approaching its limit. You must support the beam laterally at no less than every 4 feet under this condition. Furthermore, anchoring details are critical, as well as how the load is transferred to the foundation and exterior walls. We strongly recommend that you have a structural engineer confirm the proper beam size based on actual loading conditions, which aren't fully articulated here. Builders Websource
