I have a garage that is 19.5' wide. The ceiling sags about 1.5" around
5' from the back of the garage. I have a bedroom and a full bath hanging over
the entire width of the garage and about 10' over its length. They used 2x10
16oc to span the width of the garage and the roof is supported right in the
center of the garage ( on that part they stacked 3 2x10 with scrap pieces of
plywood in between them). This house is only 8 years old and was built this way.
I would like to avoid posts in my garage. When I'm upstairs you can really feel
the slope. I was thinking of cutting out the sheetrock in the ceiling and
installing some kind of wood I-beam in between the floor joists. I was thinking
of having them 19.5' plus the width of 1 2x4 so that I could slide it into place
with only about 1.5" hanging on the supporting wall on each end. And A tad
bit shorter than a 2x10 so it could be horizontal while I jack up the ceiling
then flip the I-beams vertical then just shim the ends to a snug fit. Do you
think this will work with the span and the weight of a roof, bathroom with tub,
and a bedroom? Or Could you recommend a better way. Thank you
