Remove a pole from basementFrom: robert.yorgensen@strus.com CommentsI have a pole in my basement that I wish to remove. It supports a 12 foot span of three 2x12's. I measured the load on the pole by jacking the beam until the pole was loose and measured about 600 lbs. The pole is in the center of the beam (6' from the wall and 6' from the next pole, which is in the center of the room). I am planning to leave the wooden beam in and place a steel I beam along side of it. I'll support the I beam with jack poles at each end - one end being against the foundation wall and the other in the center of the room, right next to another existing pole. This is the plan to make sure the jack poles are located over existing footings under the concrete floor. Solid plan? What should I use for the live load over the beam? Kitchen and family room join overhead with an opening of about 8 feet. This is the basement of a three story contemporary home. I would appreciate your comments. Bob
