I'm not clear where the (2) 2x8 beams are currently and what they're supporting or what orientation they're in or how long they are. Also, why do you want to use steel as opposed to wood? Is there an issue with the depth of the beam and the span or load it has? Steel is a great product, but not always easy to work with.

A little more information would be helpful.
