Re: stripping vs. sanding hardwood floors

There is no need to strip the floor first. Careful sanding will get you down to bare wood. However, if you don't have the right tools or don't have experience sanding a floor with a drum sander, you can quickly damage the floor and make it uneven. Depending on your level of experience, you may want a pro to prep the floor for you. Be sure to get in all the areas (which may require some localized hand sanding). Thoroughly clean up all dust and apply the stain. After at least 1 day, apply 3 coats of high solids polyurethane finish (typically semi-gloss). You may want to "screen sand" between finish coats for best results.
