stripping vs. sanding hardwood floors

I have hardwood floors and on the first floor of my home that is stained a
very light color. I'd like to stain it a much darker color. Should I use a
liquid stripper to remove polyurethane and then sand, or should I just use a
heavy duty sander on the floors?
