Re: Pre-Finished Hardwood FloorsFrom: info@builderswebsource.com CommentsWe do not recommend caulking the tongue and groove joints of pre-finished hardwood flooring. Wood naturally expands and contracts with variations in ambient temperature and moisture -- and it's important for the floor to have room to "breathe." Generally, if the floor is installed properly, including use of a vapor barrier underneath, the joints will be relatively snug, impeding flow of liquids. However, any messes or spills should be promptly cleaned up. If your pet is left unattended for extended periods of time, then you are taking some chances of damage to the surface from contact with acidic excretions. Vomit and urine can penetrate the finish and irreparably stain the hardwood, reacting with the wood fibers themselves. This can leave unsightly stains. If your pet poses a significant potential problem, you might consider alternative materials, such as ceramic tile or slate, depending on what's practical for your given situation. Keep in mind also that larger pets can quickly damage hardwood floors (scratches). If you have a pre-finished variety with a thin wood veneer, you may have no choice but to periodically refinish the surface to keep it looking in peak condition. Builders Websource
