Please help me with the steel beam size calculation. I want to remove a pole in the center of a 18'4'' x 22'8'' room. The span of the beam would be 18'4''. There is a second floor needed to be supported. The second floor is a hardwood floor plus carpet. Of course, this beam also needs to support the roof which is asphalt. My contractor told me that the roof weight is supported by the wall. I'm not sure about this. I live in NJ. I would like to use steel I-beam since it should be less depth than the others. If you estimate a size like 8x12, please indicate which one is depth. I am quite concerned about the depth.

If I keep existing three 1.5'x7 wood beam, would it help to reduce steel beam depth? I don't want to lower my ceiling.

Thanks a lot.
