Generally we don't recommend tiling over hardwood floors due to their expansion and contraction. However, if you plan to use Hardibacker, then you should be OK if you follow the manufacturer's recommendations. We agree with your idea to doing a lite sanding first to help roughen up the existing surface. Then use a latex-modified thinset mortar and backerboard screws (preferred) or galvanized roofing nails to secure the cement board to the existing hardwood floors. Keep in mind that you are building up the floor surface and, depending on the area involved, you may be better off to remove the existing hardwood floors, which should give you up to an additional 3/4" of clearance. In either case, you'll need to use a mortar bed or backerboard to provide a secure substrate for the tile.
