PVC Piping in Pool

I just had over pool maintenance repairmen because of leakage in the piping of my in-ground pool. They had to rip up a lot of bricks to look for the leak. They found four round holes in the PVC piping. They told me there are some sort of insects that eat through this plastic pipe. I have never heard of this before. Before I call an exterminator I would like to do a little research and I really don't know where to begin to look on the web. I live in the Northeast area, NYC. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
